Case Studies

Client: Queensland Gas Company

Spaulding Drillers was contracted by Pure Energy Resources in 2007 to undertake a coal seam gas program on the East cost of Tasmania.

This connection with Pure Energy saw the expansion of Spaulding Drillers into the coal seam gas drilling in Queensland.

With the take over of Pure Energy Resources by Queensland Gas Company in March 2009 Spaulding Drillers  has again stepped up and met their expectations.

We currently have two multi-purpose drilling rigs working for QGC. Spaulding's rig 7 is drilling core exploration and is situated in the Surrat basin. As from February 2009 there have been 576 LTI (incident free days). Spaulding rig 8 is also working for QGC and is situated in the Bowen basin drilling core exploration and since November there have been 115 incident free days.

Coal Seam Gas

Client: Grange Resources  (Formally ABM)

After a successful tender process in 1998 for an initial 10,000m drilling program designed to dewater the companies Open cut Iron ore mine on the states West coast. This program required Spaulding Drillers in conjunction with Keith Littley of KWL Drill Services in Western Australia to manufacture and tailor a specific truck mounted horizontal dewatering rig.

Although unforseen at the time this program formed the basis of a long and loyal partnership between the two companies this in addition to Spaulding Drillers tireless and relentless attitude toward safety and the commitment to suppling the latest technology available in the drilling industry saw Grange Resources engage Spaulding Drillers as the mining giants preferred drilling contractor offering Spaulding Driller Right or Refusal for all exploration drilling through out Tasmania.

As 2011 draws to an end it will see Spaulding Drillers Rig 5 and Rig 10 at the mine drilling both Diamond and Reverse Circulation to complete upwards of 70,000   metres in total for the past 13 years, which have incorporated varying disciplines of drilling  included more recently the companies Foremost Dual Rotary Rig, drill 12” diameter and 500 incline blast holes which were drilled and surveyed to intersect and remote bench at 130m.

Client: URS / Santos

In March 2011 URS in conjunction with Santos initiated Spaulding Drillers to undertake there coming water and environmental monitoring program in and around Roma Queensland. The first task associated with this program was that Spaulding Drillers onsite equipment and system were subject to a third party audit conducted by Western Australian based company Moduspec to ensure compliance with all state and petroleum based regulations and acts. Once both URS and Santos were satisfied with the glowing report for Moduspec all equipment was mobilised to Roma for the commencement of the first of four wells to  be drilled. The scope of works for the program saw Rig 2 operate 24 hours per day 7 days per week, with a total of 4 drill crews for the duration off the program being accommodated on site along with all third party contractors in a camp supplied by Coal Gas Camps. The well plan had the top drilled Mud Rotary to a target depth varying from location to location between 150m and 300m, after drilling and casing the top hole a HQ3 diamond tail was drill to TD (<600m). Upon completion of drilling all holes were logged and then upwards of 6 Vibrating Wireline Peizometers were installed and cement in place. The completion of the program saw all required hole successfully completed within the parameters of the timeframes set out.

“I want to thank you and all of the crew for a fantastic effort during a pretty fast-paced month and a half.  With all of the geological complications and logistical difficulties we encountered, your crew did a great job.  It was a pleasure working with you guys.  What I especially appreciate was the type of responsiveness that sets you guys apart and is very much appreciated.  That makes me want to do work with you again and I hope we can do just that sometime soon”.
